A major investigation was launched after a woman claimed she was sexually assaulted at a Moray beauty spot.
But police said yesterday that following extensive inquiries they had established that no crime was committed.
A “serious incident”, which was alleged to have taken place in Elgin’s Cooper Park on Friday between 10pm-midnight, was reported to officers over the weekend.
An investigation unit was sent from Aberdeen, including detectives, at least seven specialist search team members and a police photographer.
And examinations of a small, cordoned-off area of the park between the library and bowling green continued until around 4pm on Saturday.
Cooper Park is a main walking route from the town centre to Bishopmill and the north of Elgin.
On Saturday, police confirmed they were still appealing for witnesses regarding allegations that a woman had been sexually assaulted in the park on Friday evening, but they refused to say whether or not anyone had been injured.
However, a police spokeswoman confirmed yesterday that the incident was no longer being regarded as criminal in nature.
She added: “After further investigation, it’s been established that no crime has occurred.”
Inquiries are still ongoing into the incident and it is not yet known whether any further action will be taken.
