SNP councillors throw support behind rural Moray schools

Moray’s SNP councillors gave their backing to rural schools yesterday in a strong statement ahead of next week’s showdown education talks.

The SNP group announced their intention to oppose rural school closures in the county just days before the report on Moray Council’s Sustainable Education Review which is to be considered by councillors on November 3.

SNP group leader councillor Pearl Paul said: “We are disappointed in the report produced. We expected a far more radical study looking at how education can be delivered but, unfortunately, this report is too focused on numbers and buildings.

“Critically many of the schools lined up for closure, including Milne’s High, have very good inspection reports, and we cannot see how these proposals could be pursued on education grounds or, indeed, how that would be within the new Scottish Parliament legislation protecting rural schools.

“We recognise that there is a significant problem with limited school places in Elgin and that there is scope to improve the educational environment for Forres town pupils.

“Therefore, we support action being taken to address this as a matter of urgency.”

An SNP spokesman said: “We have concluded that there is no justification to close rural schools on educational grounds, when many of them have received very positive inspection reports and are clearly providing a good education.

“Over £1 million in extra funding comes to Moray Council due to the number of small schools the region has, which the council could be in danger of losing.

“SNP councillors intend to put forward a motion to ensure no rural school closes when the council meets to consider the report next week.”

Last night, Labour councillor Sean Morton said he also found the education review “wanting” and vowed to work with his party and across party lines to save key rural schools.

Mr Morton said: “I have listened hard to our communities and various experts over the last year or so. I have made my mind up on the report published recently and have found it wanting. I will support any motion next Monday against rural school closures, and I will do anything I can to save Milne’s High.

“I will continue to work with my party and across party lines to ensure we have 21st century schools where young people can flourish.”
