A second party has decided to give youth a chance in the forthcoming Elgin North by-election.
Labour has named 21-year-old politics student Craig Graham as its candidate for the ballot on December 11.
Last week, the Scottish Conservatives nominated 19-year-old Alex Griffiths, a former Gordonstoun pupil, to stand in the by-election.
Mr Graham is a former Elgin Academy pupil and is currently in his final year of a history and politics degree at UHI Moray College.
He has issued five pledges – with three relating to schools in the Elgin area.
He wants to bring more technology into schools, keep class sizes small with a new primary for the town and halt overcrowding of secondary schools.
Mr Graham said he also wanted more improvements for the town centre and promised to tackle low pay by extending the living wage.
He said: “It is an honour to be chosen to represent Labour. I watched how hard they’ve worked over the last few years and I would love the chance to help make a difference.”
Mr Graham, a keen footballer, said his studies gave him a broad understanding of politics, and his local knowledge gave him a “sound understanding” of the issues which matter.
The by-election was called after Labour councillor Barry Jarvis announced he was standing down in order to return to university and train as a modern studies teacher.
Councillor Jarvis said: “I’ve known Craig for a number of years and think he’ll be a great candidate.
“He works hard and he’s very committed. That’s exactly what Elgin North needs.
“His selection is another great example of Moray Labour putting its faith in young people.”
There is an electorate of more than 9,400 in the Elgin North ward.
Counting of the by-election votes will take place on December 12, the day after the poll.
