Major whisky company employees mentor school pupils

Three employees of Scotch whisky and gin producer Chivas Brothers pushed themselves to the limit to become Outward Bound Trust mentors during a recent outdoor activity trip.

Fenella Letham, Rachel Higgins and Kris Harrison were chosen to become Chivas Brothers’ first ever employee mentors after being selected from several applicants for the coveted places.

While at Loch Eil, they assisted a group of 30 pupils aged 13-14 from Uddingston Grammar school, who Chivas Brothers funded to take part in the week-long residential Outward Bound course. They guided the pupils through a number of activities aimed at building their confidence and preparing them for the world of work.

Miss Letham said: “I was delighted to be selected as an Outward Bound mentor as it’s a fantastic scheme. The pupils were engaged and it was really rewarding to see them develop over the course of the week.”

Teacher John Millar of Uddingston Grammar added: “The pupils had a very enjoyable experience at Loch Eil and it was great to see them really challenge themselves as well as learning all about teamwork and developing skills they will use in the world of work. Fenella, Chris and Rachel were fantastic mentors and really helped bring the activities to life, alongside a team of excellent Outward Bound instructors.”

Martin Davidson, Scottish Director of the Outward Bound Trust, added: “The involvement of Fenella, Chris and Rachel really helped our instructors deliver learning that was relevant to the pupils’ everyday lives and to create an environment where we could highlight the importance of having an entrepreneurial spirit.”
