A pensioner has died after her car left the road and crashed into a tree early today.
Emergency services were called to the A98 Fochabers to Buckie road at about 4.25am.
The red Vauxhall Astra caught fire after hitting the tree, not far from the A96 Fochabers roundabout.
The 83-year-old, who was alone in the car, was taken to Dr Gray’s Hospital in Elgin but was pronounced dead a short time later.
Her next of kin had been informed.
The road remains closed while collision investigators examine the scene.
Sergeant Steve Manson, from the roads policing unit, said: “Our thoughts are with the woman’s family and friends at this difficult time.
“Our inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and I would urge anyone who may have information or dashcam footage from the area this morning to get in touch.
“Please pass any information on by calling 101, quoting incident 0320 of March 4 2022.”
