Former Gordonstoun child porn teacher “unfit to teach”

A former Gordonstoun teacher has been declared unfit to teach and struck off the teaching register following a conviction for child porn offences.

Samuel Henley, who was a maths teacher at the Moray school, was dismissed after he was caught with sexual images of children.

His case went before a General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) panel on Thursday, but Mr Henley did not attend the hearing.

Police searched the home of the former teacher’s parents in July 2010 and seized three computers and a memory stick. Sexual images featuring boys and girls as young as 8-years-old were found on a computer.

Henley pleaded guilty to six charges of making indecent images of a child between May and July 2009 and was convicted in February this year. Not guilty pleas to a further 24 charges of the same offence were allowed to lie on his file.

He was sentenced to a conditional discharge for two years and placed on the Sex Offender’s Register for the same length of time.

The disgraced teacher has also been made subject to a Sexual Offences Protection Order for a period of five years.

The GTCS yesterday removed him from the teaching register, and he will not be eligible to re-apply for registration for a period of two years.

None of the images are believed to feature students at Gordonstoun, which educates around 600 boys and girls with alumni including the Duke of Edinburgh and Prince Charles.

In a statement released last week, a spokeswoman at Gordonstoun said: “The school recruited Mr Henley as a teacher of mathematics in September 2009 following the normal recruitment procedure which includes an enhanced Disclosure Scotland check against police records.

“Mr Henley’s employment at the school was terminated as soon as we became aware of the gravity of the allegations in August 2010. The police confirmed that the images concerned in the charges against him preceded his employment at the school.

“We take child protection extremely seriously at Gordonstoun and we are committed to providing a safe and nurturing environment for all our students.”
