Generous residents of Moray have raised a record-breaking £23,700 for Poppy Scotland — a poignant achievement to mark the centenary of the Great War.
Chairman of Poppy Scotland in Elgin, Lieutenant Colonel David Broadfoot MBE., was delighted with the “incredible” sum raised, which surpassed last year’s total by over £5,000.
He said: “Through the generosity of the people of Elgin and Llanbryde, the incredible sum £23,700 has been raised to help with this vital veteran’s charity — some £5,300 more than 2013.
“I’d like to express my thanks to all members of the public who gave so much in such difficult economic times, to the hard working committee and all the volunteer collectors, and to the Clydesdale bank who continue year on year to give up their spare time to count these large sums.
“I was particularly overwhelmed when I received a last minute cheque for £1,500 from the Glen Moray Male Voice Choir — raised through their concert at St Giles Church.”
Mr Broadfoot expressed a huge thanks to the Commanding Officer and all ranks at RAF Lossiemouth, who not only provided some 50 volunteer collectors on the final Saturday, but also produced a large cheque from within the station.
He added: “Station Warrant Officer Bernie Morrell, for the past three years, has given the committee outstanding support.
“Elgin and Llanbryde continue to punch well above their weight in comparison to the rest of the country and this is something we should all be hugely proud of.”
