Community leaders have condemned vandals who defaced public toilets in a Moray village twice in the space of just a few days.
The thugs caused hundreds of pounds worth of damage at the building in Lossiemouth’s Station Park.
On both occasions toilet seats were ripped off and broken and taps slackened, causing the premises to flood.
The damage was discovered by council staff who turned up on December 31 and again on January 5 to clean the facilities.
The toilets have been a regular target for vandals who also struck in 2013 and again just a few months ago.
Following the previous incidents, a group of local volunteers offered to take responsibility for locking the toilets at night, with Moray Council’s team of mobile cleaning staff opening them again in the morning.
Last night local councillor John Cowe hit out at the latest attacks, saying they were “sickening”.
“Everything seemed to have settled down after the incident 18 months or so ago and it is sickening that this sort of behaviour should rear its ugly head again,” he said.
“The damage has been repaired yet again but spending money fixing damage caused by a small minority of senseless individuals cannot carry on indefinitely.
“Someone must know who is responsible, and I hope that they will come forward and help stamp out this sort of behaviour which, if it is allowed to continue, will only damage Lossiemouth’s reputation.”
Mike Mulholland, chairman of Lossiemouth Community Council, said: “It absolutely daft. Why they would target the toilets, I have no idea.
“It would appear this incident happened when the locking up rota had maybe missed a couple of nights over the new year.
“Hopefully, we can come up with some sort of answer to this. I don’t know if it is the same crew as in the past, but if the public would just keep a look out, it would be good to catch them.
“It would save a lot of money that the community relies on. We are trying to improve that particular area in every aspect as a community facility, so it’s disappointing.”
Police are appealing to anyone with information on the incidents to come forward.
