A tiny kitten is being cared for after she was rescued from a drain at Gordonstoun School.
Staff working at the Elgin school heard the kitten crying in the drain on Sunday night and rushed to rescue her.
They texted animal lover Tessa Lumley, who works on the school’s social media team. She took one look at freshly the bathed bundle of fluff and couldn’t resist taking her home.
She said: “Instead of looking at her then going home and talking to my husband, I looked at her and we came home with a kitten.”
The kitten – who has been named Lexie Grey as a nod to one of the family’s favourite TV shows, Grey’s Anatomy – is now recovering well in the Lumley home.
Settling in
Lexie has been checked over by a vet who believes she is between six and seven weeks old. Though she is feral and weaned, this is usually too young for her to be away from her mum.
She is settling in well – and although being kept separate from the family’s other pets for now, is still “talking” to them through the door.
“She’s quite shouty because the world is a terrifying place when you’ve had the start she’s had,” said Mrs Lumley.
“She was very tired , she slept a lot for the first day but now she’s a bit more perky.”
Lexie is the fourth animal to be welcomed into the Lumley household after a dog and two older cats.
‘Human contact, warmth, love and food’
Though Mrs Lumley, her husband Jamie and Emily are in “24-hour kitten care” mode, they are not sure if Lexie will stay with them forever.
Much to their disappointment, they have come to accept that the kitten could make someone else very happy.
Mrs Lumley said: “We’re in between fostering and adopting her.
“If no one turns up who would love her and care for her then of course we will keep her, but if someone turns up and she would be a blessing to them then we wouldn’t keep her.
“It’s quite a responsibility having a tiny little kitten padding around the house.”
For now, she needs “human contact, warmth, love and food”, all of which she is getting lots of in the Lumley home.
