Parents in Moray are being urged to be vigilant after a box of animal drugs were stolen from a vehicle in Buckie.
Local councillor Gordon McDonald fears children could come across the medication, which is said to be dangerous to humans, and is calling on parents to be on the look-out.
Various quantities of different medication were taken from the vehicle, which was parked in the Milton Drive area, in the early hours of Saturday.
Police are still hunting for the culprits, and are warning the public of the “potentially harmful” nature of the drugs.
Mr McDonald, who represents the Buckie area, said: “Maybe the people that took it were not that bright, and thought it was GP medicine, but perhaps someone is able to break down some of that stuff to use in other drugs.
“Some people think it may have been one of these chance events, where a person has just grabbed it without knowing what it is.
“The worry behind that is they have dumped it somewhere kids can come across it.
“The vet uses medication to put down sick animals and that stuff could be lethal if it gets into the wrong hands.
“Talking to folk locally, the main concern is ‘what if kids come across it?'”
Partners at Buckie’s Seafield Veterinary Group were unavailable for comment last night.
Police believe the thieves may try to sell the stolen medication, which they have warned could be dangerous if taken by humans.
Investigating officer, Constable Steve Borzoni urged anyone with information – or may have been offered them for sale – to come forward.
