More than £2.1 million will be spent on Moray Council’s Active Schools and Community Sports programme over the next four years.
The council has backed the scheme with £979,077 with the remaining £1,185,928 coming from Sportscotland.
Funding will support the employment of active school coordinators and other key staff that will run events and activities until 2027.
The team currently stage events for schools across Moray during term time and publishes a full activity guide during the summer holidays.
Moray Council is also keen to support the development and long-term sustainability of community sports clubs.
These are across Moray, including Elgin’s Cooper Park, Hopeman, Keith, Forres, Lossiemouth and Buckie.
The aim is to promote participation in sports while engaging with the local community at a centralised “hub”.
‘Delighted’ with funding news
In 2021/2022 over 3,218 participants took part in Active School’s activities, with around 26% of the school population of Moray involved.
The programme also offers a range of sports for people with disabilities including orienteering, athletics, golf, tennis and boccia at Milne’s High School in Fochabers.
Sport and Culture service manager, Kim Slater, said: “The sheer volume of activities and events and support to clubs that the Active Schools and Community Sport team provides demonstrates their commitment as well as the demand in Moray for sport and physical activity participation.
“Given the number of young people who accessed activities in the past year with additional support needs, disabilities and from less affluent backgrounds, we can see the value of our team for everyone.
“I’m delighted this work will be supported for a further four years and I look forward to seeing Moray reap the benefits of our programmes.”
