Older people in Moray are being encouraged to share their memories of days gone by for a new project.
A new memory group has been set up at Elgin Library, where photos, films, books, music and other archive materials will be on display.
It is hoped the taster sessions – which form part of the Memories Scotland reminiscence project – will get over 60s to get together to socialise and chat.
The group will meet at the library on Thursdays from 1.30pm-3pm from November 17.
The first of the free tasters will look at how Elgin’s high street has changed over the years, with later sessions covering fishing, farming, the royal family in Moray and the festive season.
Depending on the success of the project, it could be rolled out to other libraries in the region.
‘Reducing social isolation’
Councillor James Allan, one of Moray Council’s older persons’ champions, said: “Memories Scotland is the latest phase of a project which started in 2009 with the launch of the Football Memories programme.
“The innovative partnership between Alzheimer Scotland, the Scottish Football Museum and representatives from sports heritage networks proved extremely successful in engaging older people in reminiscence discussions and I’m delighted to see it come to Moray.”
The council’s other older persons’ champion, Councillor Sonya Warren, added: “Expanding the project beyond those living with dementia, this new library-based memory group promotes wider participation with the aim of reducing social isolation and improving wellbeing and connectedness at a community level.”
