Olympic gold medallist Heather Stanning has become Outfit Moray’s newest patron.
The rower has strong links to the region having attended Gordonstoun pupil and been awarded the freedom of Moray in September 2016.
She also has a gold post box on Quarry Road in Lossiemouth, where her parents still live, to celebrate her 2012 Olympic gold medal.
Ms Stanning, who has won two Olympic gold medals in women’s coxless pairs with her rowing partner, Helen Glove, is an MBE and is a full-time serving Army officer.
These accolades put her in line with Outfit Moray – an outdoor learning and adventure charity which aims to help vulnerable children grow in confidence and build self-esteem.
‘Truly honoured’
Speaking about her appointment as patron, Ms Stanning said: “I am truly honoured to have the association with Outfit Moray and genuinely believe the good work you are doing for both the wider community and young people is invaluable.
“The importance of outdoor learning, adventure and exploring what is on your doorstep cannot be underestimated. And for those in Moray it’s a real gift to have Outfit Moray there to provide this learning.”
Chief executive of the charity Tony Brown explained why the rower was a perfect fit for the charity.
“Her passion for sport and outdoor adventure means she understands the difference it can make to the lives of the young people we work with and she’ll be a great ambassador for our charity,” he said.
