A pensioner was reduced to tears after her husband was reunited with the wedding ring he has worn for 64 years after losing it at Brodie Castle.
Elaine Butterworth visited the Moray attraction with her elderly parents to enjoy the castle’s annual autumn lights show after travelling from her home in Vancouver to visit them.
However, she later realised her father, who has dementia, had lost his wedding ring.
After she phoned Brodie Castle, team member Anne Owens searched the castle for Charlie Watson’s wedding ring.
Exhaustive search for ring
At first, Ms Owens couldn’t find the ring anywhere after searching high and low for it.
She said: “They’d been looking everywhere for the wedding ring, they’d even taken the drainpipe off in the kitchen and it was absolutely nowhere.
“Elaine said ‘This is a longshot, but he possibly (lost the ring) when he took his gloves off at the front of the castle and also when they had hot chocolate in the marquee.’
“She did explain he’s in his 90s, he has dementia, and he was really worried about it.
“I went for a look, there was nothing outside the castle, I had look in the marquee and checked all around, there was nothing I could see.”
However, after letting a bird out of the marquee, she met a man and his child who helped her to successfully track down the ring.
“There was a wee bird hopping along the marquee, as I opened up the tent to let the bird out, a chap and his child were there and said they’d help me have a look.
“The dad came in and sure enough it was on the second table, I’d just missed it. It was so exciting because I know it means so much to them,” she said.
‘Crying with relief’
Ms Owens described Mr Watson’s wedding ring as a signet ring, with his initials on it and an engraving on the inside.
She then got in touch with Mr Watson’s wife, Margaret, who broke down in tears of joy at the news.
“Elaine had given me her mother Margaret’s number because she was due to fly back to Canada the next day.
“I phoned Margaret, and she was a lovely lady, she was so happy that she was crying with relief.”C
“I said if she’s comfortable with me dropping it off on the way home, I’d be delighted to do that and so that’s what happened,” she added.
