Pupils from a Moray primary school yesterday commenced a national Walk to School week on the right foot.
Last week Elgin’s Bishopmill Primary School recorded a greater amount of pupils arriving by foot than anywhere else in Scotland.
And yesterday round 300 youngsters from the primary started the day with a bracing walk from the town’s leisure centre to the school grounds to help kick off the national campaign.
To keep their spirits up along the stroll, they took part in a special dance to popular Proclaimers song I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles).
The school’s deputy head Irma Westwood said: “As a school we promote healthy living all the time, and recently we’ve been using a travel tracker to see how many of our pupils get to school on foot.
“Last week Bishopmill had the most pupils who walked to school out of every primary in Scotland, and we’re very proud of their efforts.
“Even children who need to travel into the town have been taking part in our ‘park and strike’ scheme, where parents can drop them off in neighbouring areas of the town to allow them to walk part of the way.”
Walk to School week has been organised by national pedestrian charity Living Streets, to promote safe and enjoyable streets.
The charity’s Chris Thomson said: “Over half of Scottish schoolchildren walk to school and the figures are stable, but much lower than for previous generations.
“Efforts to promote walking to school at a local and national level need to expand and we’ll continue to work with schools and councils to improve matters.”
