A multi-million-pound refurbishment project will begin at four Moray primary schools this summer.
The £17million programme will result in major improvements at Applegrove in Forres, Millbank in Buckie, Seafield in Elgin and St Gerardine in Lossiemouth.
It is going ahead with the help of a £10million grant from the Scottish Government, with Moray Council providing the remainder of the funding.
The work will include new roof coverings, windows and doors, external insulation, new toilets and modern heating and electrical systems.
Work will start during the summer break and will continue until spring 2017.
Each development will be carried out in phases and all four schools will remain operational throughout.
Pupils will be moved within their schools or decanted into temporary accommodation as work progresses.
Buckie councillor Gordon Cowie welcomed the improvements.
He said: “This is a great thing, I cannot praise the investment highly enough.
“We want to take the schools up to the standards that these children deserve so that they can work in an environment which allows them to achieve to the best of their ability.
“In Millbank, they are putting in four extra classrooms, which will increase the school’s capacity, and modernising the school can only be a good thing for the kids.”
Forres councillor Lorna Creswell added: “At the end of the day, it will be an upgrade for the kids.
“Some would have preferred a new school all together, but you can only do what you can with the restricted amount of money you are given.”
Planning approval has been given for all four sites and the contract has been awarded to Galliford Try, the parent company of Morrison Construction.
