Bomb disposal experts descended on a picturesque Moray fishing port this afternoon after a World War II explosive washed ashore.
The shocking discovery at Burghead beach was made by retiree Spencer Julian while he was walking his West Highland Terrier Maisie on Wednesday afternoon.
Senior officer with the Coastguard service, Colin Wood, said: “We think it was a World War II naval projectile shell.
“After it was discovered efforts were made to ensure people stayed away from the area.
“Thankfully the tide kept it covered for much of Thursday morning, and a Royal Navy bomb disposal team arrived at 2.30pm in the afternoon.
“They dug a hole around the device, and attached a lot of little explosives to it before detonating it safely.”
