Moray’s political leaders are encouraging local youngsters to enter the festive spirit a little early this year by creating Christmas cards for them.
MP Angus Robertson and MSP Richard Lochhead yesterday launched their annual Christmas card design competition, which is open to all primary school aged children in the region.
The winning design will be used for cards distributed by Moray’s parliamentary office during the yuletide season, and artistic youngsters taking part are being asked to focus on a theme of “happiness”.
The competition has attracted sponsorship from several local firms, and funds raised will go to the Moray Women’s Aid charity.
Mr Robertson said: “Over the years we have had a huge number of entries from children all over Moray, and every year we have great designs to choose from.”
Mr Lochhead added: “Each year we nominate a charity working in Moray, which we highlight in the card.
“This year’s highlighted charity is Moray Women’s Aid, who do a huge amount of work providing refuge and support for victims of domestic abuse.”
Service Manager at Moray Women’s Aid, Elle Johnston, said she was “delighted” the Lindsay Watling, Westminster Correspondent politcians had chosen to raise awareness of the group’s work.
Last year’s sponsorship raised £1,000 for the Moray Foodbank group, and in 2013 a card designed by ten-year-old Louis Russell raised funds for young carers.
Entries should be submitted by Friday, November 20 and sent to Moray Parliamentary Office, 9 Wards Road, Elgin, IV30 1NL.
