An amateur footballer was jailed for 20 days yesterday for threatening to “burn down” the home of a referee who showed him a red card.
Conor McGregor, 23, of 38 Grant Street, Elgin, lost it with the official overseeing the Forres and Nairn District Welfare match between his Elgin United side and Kinloss Sappers.
Elgin Sheriff Court heard how the referee had tried to warn McGregor about his behaviour during the game at Kinloss Barracks on September 4, but he reacted angrily and was sent off for foul and abusive language.
He left the pitch but refused to leave the touchline, where he launched a tirade of abuse.
The court heard how he told the ref – ‘I will get you after the game’.
After being shown a second red card, McGregor continued to prowl the sideline before hurling a further volley of abuse towards the ref, including a threat to ‘burn your house down’.
McGregor eventually left the ground and the incident was reported to police.
Yesterday, the court heard how the father-of-one is currently serving a six-month custodial sentence for two other unrelated offences.
Sheriff Olga Pasportnikov extended his stay behind bars for 20 days after he pleaded guilty to the latest offence.
