Blue is the colour for all-change RAF pipe bands

The RAF Lossiemouth Pipes & Drums band has changed its colours from the Ancient Sutherland tartan to the Royal Air Force tartan.

The change means, alongside Lossiemouth, all of the RAF station pipe bands — Halton, Waddington and Central Scotland (formally Leuchars) — will now wear the famous blue military tartan.

However, the different bands will still be distinguishable by wearing their own ties.

The RAF Lossiemouth Pipes & Drums band was formerly RAF Kinloss Pipes & Drums.

It moved to Lossiemouth when the Kinloss camp was handed over to the Army in 2011.

Pipe Major Barry Ashby said: “Everyone will have seen the band performing on parades and at fundraisers, socials and ceremonial occasions wearing the Ancient Sutherland tartan that we have worn since 1957.

“Hopefully everyone will soon recognise us in our new tartan as we continue to provide musical support to the Station and to public events.”

This year, the RAF Lossiemouth Pipes & Drums have performed at the Officers’ Mess Burn’s Supper, the 15 (Reserve) Squadron 100th anniversary parade, the Armed Forces Day parade in Keith, as well as on numerous occasions at Kinloss Barracks in support of 39 Engineer Regiment.

A contingent also formed part of the RAF Massed Pipes and Drums at the Edinburgh Tattoo and the full band represented RAF Lossiemouth at the Highland Military Tattoo at Fort George.

New members are always welcome and anyone interested in joining should contact Pipe Major Ashby on 01309 676432.
