A group of Moray pensioners determined not to let old age stop them from pursuing young dreams begin their new chapter today.
The University of the Third Age (U3A) is an international organisation focused on educating and stimulating mainly retired members of the community – those in their third “age” of life.
Elgin’s fledgling U3A branch holds its first official meetings in the town hall’s supper room today at 2pm in the hope of giving people the chance to share their creative expertise and knowledge to keep busy.
The way the U3A works, anyone with a passion for any activity or subject conceivable can form an interest group with like-minded people and explore.
Committee member Terry Ballard said: “U3A is aimed at older people to encourage and help them pursue their interests.
“No qualifications are required to become a member, nor are qualifications given.
“There are no formal lectures or assessments, just people getting together to pursue common interests.”
Following the launch of the group in September 2015, there are already interest groups covering topics as diverse as ancestry, film and French conversation.
For a nominal £10 annual subscription members can join as many groups as they wish and receive the U3A magazine which provides a forum for the dissemination of ideas throughout the UK.
There will also be an array of special guests speak at the meetings, held every eight weeks.
Another founding member, cancer survivor Rosie Hales-Tooke enjoyed her maiden voyage with Highland Gliding Club in September, and is already planning her return trip.
The energetic 80-year-old is also now considering getting behind the wheel for the first time, and plans to keep her mind active by learning Latin and encouraged others to have a go.
The Elgin and District U3A meets every two months. Anyone interested in finding out more can just turn up on the day, or call 01343 544858.
