Glasses have been raised across Moray in tribute to a whisky legend who died after a valiant battle against cancer.

David Urquhart lost his fight with the disease on Monday at the age of 63, surrounded by his family in Findhorn.

Mr Urquhart rose to prominence as one of the leaders of the region’s drinks industry, helping Gordon and Macphail blossom into a global powerhouse during his tenure at its helm.

In his latter years he played a crucial role in boosting Moray’s tourist economy as a founding father of the annual Piping at Forres extravaganza.

In October he was made honorary life president of the event in recognition of his efforts in bringing the European Pipe Band Championships event to the town and promoting it.

Last night, Mr Urquhart was described as a family man, a community champion and a “legendary figure in the whisky industry”.

Gordon and Macphail’s chief operating officer, Ewen Mackintosh, led the tributes.

“David was a wonderful character and a born salesman who played a huge role in the company,” he said.

“He became a legendary figure in the whisky industry, and we will all miss his drive, energy and enthusiasm.”

Piping at Forres chairman Ian Widdowson said Mr Urquhart was a “tower of strength” in organising the yearly bagpipe bash.

Moray MSP Richard Lochhead, who is the Scottish Government’s Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs, Food and Environment, also worked closely with Mr Urquhart in his various roles.

Mr Lochhead said: “David Urquhart was much loved, he made an enormous contribution to business and community life in Moray.

“He leaves behind a rich, lasting legacy having played a crucial role in so many projects.

“I had the privilege to work with David over the years and see his incredible enthusiasm and passion for so many local causes.

“But most of all he was a family man.”

Moray MP Angus Robertson said Mr Urquhart’s passing represented a “huge loss” for Moray.

He added: “He has been a great ambassador for Moray both at home and abroad, and will be sorely missed by many people.”

Mr Urquhart is survived by his wife Sheila and twin sons, Richard and Stuart.
