A man approached the boy and engaged him in conversation, before leaving in the direction of Stynie Road.
The car is described as a light silver coloured hatchback or saloon with a trailer which had logs in it.
Constable Mairi Page said: “We would like to trace the driver of the car, so that we can establish the circumstances of his conversation with the boy and we would appeal to the driver to get in touch, we can rule anything untoward out.
“If you were in the area at the time and have information which may assist our enquiries we would ask that you contact us on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 if you wish to remain anonymous.”
