A teenager from Miltonduff has been named as one of the best young cyclists in the country.

Georgia Mansfield, a fifth-year pupil at Elgin High School, picked up a gold medal in recognition of being the top girl biker to compete in Scottish Cycling’s best all rounder competition

The award was given to her after she clocked the fastest time out of all the other young girls who raced the two 25-mile time trials and two 10-mile time trials which the cycling body hosted throughout the year.

It is the 16-year-old’s second year in a row as one of the country’s top athletes and she now has aspirations of turning professional.

Last night, she said a lot of work had gone into making it to the top of youth competitions but that she would find it difficult to fund the next step by herself.

Georgia said: “I’m hoping to make it into the Scottish team next year, but that means winning a lot of professional road races and time trials.

“A lot of the events are down in Glasgow – especially for the track racing – and I just can’t afford to travel down there. It would be nearly every weekend and it would be very hard.”

Cycling club Moray Wheelers is now attempting to highlight Georgia’s story to generate sponsorship from within Elgin.

Sheila Scott, a club member, said: “The success of promising young local sports girls and boys is very much dependent on the support and generosity of local companies.

“I hope some local companies in Moray will support us in giving Georgia a helping hand.”

The money will be used to cover her travel and accommodation costs and purchase equipment of a sufficient standard and quality to enable her to compete at the highest level.

She has also been backed by her school.

Head teacher Andy Simpson said: “None of her circle of friends are involved in cycling which is further testimony to her personal drive and determination.

“We’re totally supporting her – she’s well committed and motivated, and is certainly putting in the hours.”
