The search for two pensioners reported missing in Moray ended in tragedy yesterday when two bodies were found near the Bridge of Sourden in Speyside.
Police confirmed last night that the victims were Kathleen Edward from Aberlour and Rosemary Laing of Rothes.
An extensive search had started earlier in the week when Mrs Edward, 85, was reported missing from Broomfield Square on Tuesday afternoon.
A team comprising coastguards, police divers, rescue dogs and a helicopter scoured the nearby area in search of the vulnerable pensioner.
The effort continued on Wednesday and, following a briefing at Rothes Police Station at 10am, teams split into separate groups to comb the surrounding area.
The search widened with a police helicopter being deployed over the Spey and rescue dog units being used along the river’s banks.
A similar effort was launched later on the same day when Ms Laing, 77, was reported missing in nearby Rothes.
The two bodies were discovered yesterday afternoon and families have been made aware.
It is understood that police are treating the deaths as unrelated.
Mrs Edward’s grandson took to social media to thank members of the public for their help.
Jamie Stephen, a student, said: “Unfortunately my granny’s body was found in the river.
“Spending time with family and would like to thank everyone for their help and support.”
Police officers were also grateful for the help of nearby residents.
Chief Inspector Stewart Mackie, area commander for Moray, said: “I would like to thank the public for their help and information in relation to the searches for both ladies.
“The support from the public for both of these sad and unconnected cases has been very much appreciated.
“I would also like to express our gratitude for the assistance we have received from the Coastguard and members of the Braemar Mountain Rescue Team.
“Our condolences go to the families of Kathleen and Rosemary.”
