Elgin Rotary Club is motoring ahead with plans for a biennial family fun day which will this year feature a royal twist.
The group will stage its popular Marafun event on Sunday, June 5, in the town’s Cooper Park.
Organisers run the extravaganza every two years as a way of thanking the residents who support their campaigns, and its primary attraction is the range of sparkling vehicles that line up along the grassy expanse.
But this year’s installment will adopt a special regal touch, in recognition of the Queen’s 90th birthday.
The milestone date falls on April 21, and Rotarians are urging residents to invoke that celebratory spirit during the June gathering.
They will stage a “picnic in the park” akin to the garden parties the Queen is known to host at royal residences.
Club member Michelle Anderson said: “We want to make the Motorfun a bit different every time, and this year we’re asking people to take along a picnic.
“The Queen’s 90th birthday is a huge occasion for the country, and we want to recognise that.
“There is no charge whatsoever to attend the event, it’s a way of saying thank you to everybody who has supported us.”
The upcoming spectacular includes a “show and shine” exhibition of distinctive and gleaming motors, and a range of classic cars.
Already, organisers anticipate more than 200 cars and 100 motorbikes will take part.
There will be an array of exhibitions and displays, and local groups will provide music across the afternoon.
The event will run from noon to 5pm, and charities are being encouraged to contact Elgin Rotary Club to apply for a stall on the day.
