A teenage boy has died after his bicycle and a car collided on a country road in Moray.
The 16-year-old was cycling on the B9010 Dallas to Kellas road when the accident happened yesterday morning.
It is understood he had been with a group of friends when the collision, involving a white Volkswagen Golf, took place at about 11am.
Police last night confirmed the boy, who has not yet been named, died at the scene.
Nobody else was injured.
The road was closed for several hours while collision investigators examined the scene and the Golf, which was badly damaged at the passenger side.
A police spokesman said: “We can confirm that a male 16-year-old cyclist has died following a collision on the B9010 Dallas to Kellas road just after 11am.
“The collision involved the cyclist and a white Volkswagen Golf.
“No one in the Golf was injured and the cyclist died at the scene.”
The local community was in shock last night, with many passing on their condolences to the boy’s family.
Moray MSP Richard Lochhead said: “This is a terrible, shocking tragedy and the thoughts of the whole community will be with the young boy’s family and friends. People of all ages can be seen cycling on our local roads, and this is every family’s worst nightmare.”
The road reopened at about 8pm last night.
Officers have appealed for anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them on 101.
