Buckie Harbour has become the fifteenth in Scotland to sign up to an international scheme dedicated to keeping the seas free of rubbish.
The Fishing for Litter initiative is run by KIMO UK and supported by the Scottish Government.
The project will work across the entire northern coastline where the cost of dealing with marine litter is believed to be around £10,000 for every fishing vessel.
In response to the latest initiative, a skip has been established on the pier at Buckie for litter and large bags are now available free of charge.
Thus far, six vessels registered at the harbour have signed up to the scheme – the Regent Bird, Heather Sprig, Caledonia II, Eschol, Rival and Homeland.
Others looking to take part in the scheme can collect applications from the Buckie harbour office, which is open 24-hours a day.
KIMO UK’s National Coordinator, Graham Humphries, has welcomed the harbour’s involvement.
He said: “It is great to have the support of Buckie Harbour and local fishermen.
“With their help, we can make fishing a little better as well as improving the environment for sea mammals and seabirds.”
