A Moray man’s crusade to resolve flooding on a busy Keith bridge has paid off with work now being successfully completed to fix damaged drains.
Following heavy rainfall at the beginning of the year, water was backing up at the busy Union Bridge, which stretches over the River Isla.
Alex Morrison feared the waterlogged crossing would cause road safety problems and launched a campaign to get the drains cleared.
The semi-retired digger operator said motorists were behaving “dangerously” in their efforts to avoid skidding through deep pools of water.
The 64-year-old said: “Cars were going round the corner in the middle of the road to avoid the big puddles along the side.
“Even when it wasn’t raining, there was still a bit of water there.
“It was all backed up and it looked like it was never going to go away.”
Engineers from Bear Scotland have now cleared the blockage from the drain, and after the work the water dissipated from the road instantly.
Yesterday, a jubilant Mr Morrison reflected on the time he spent highlighting the issue to the relevant authorities.
He added: “This has taken me months, calling around the local councillors and Bear Scotland.
“It definitely needed something done, people were getting soaked just walking on the pavement.”
Last month, Bear made arrangements for work to be done and the firm said it would install a new drain to stop it happening again.
A spokeswoman said: “Following concerns about flooding on the Union Bridge, our teams carried out an investigation into the cause and completed the associated works last
week.
“We’re are pleased that this issue has been resolved to the satisfaction of the local resident.”
