A 69-year-old man has died after a number of boats capsized at a north-east yacht race.
The incident happened at Findhorn Bay shortly before 2pm this afternoon.
Weather conditions in the area have been poor today and reports from the scene suggest a gust of wind overturned as many as seven vessels.
The man, who it is understood was not participating in the race, required emergency medical attention and later died. The man’s next of kin have been informed.
A police spokeswoman said: “Police Scotland can confirm that a 69-year-old man has died after his boat capsized in the Findhorn Bay area.
“Police and other emergency services responded to reports of a man in difficulty today, Saturday, May 21, at around 1.45pm.
“The man was brought ashore but he sadly died at the scene.”
Police have confirmed that the man’s family have been informed and that no further details will be released until he has been formally identified.
The spokeswoman added: “There are no apparent suspicious circumstances and as with all sudden deaths a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
A spokesman for the ambulance service said: “We received an emergency call at 1.50pm to attend the scene. Three ambulance crews attended.”
