A pensioner was robbed by a sneak thief at an Elgin supermarket car park.
The woman, in her 80s, was approached by a man in his 40s at Asda last Sunday afternoon.
It is believed the pensioner was distracted by the man, who claimed to be lost and was asking how to get to Edinburgh.
During their conversation, a large map was used to draw the woman’s attention away from her belongings.
As a consequence, her purse was stolen and her bank card used to withdraw £300 from her account.
Constable Paige MacDonald, who is investigating the theft, has warned people to be aware of criminals using diversionary tactics to steal belongings.
She said: “We are carrying out enquiries to trace the person responsible, which has included reviewing CCTV.
“However, we are appealing to the public for information that could assist with our investigation.
“Additionally, we want to warn the public to be aware of criminals using distraction methods when committing thefts.
“When using bank cards, make sure your pin is covered from view and keep your belongings secure.”
The theft occurred at the Asda car park on Edgar Road in Elgin at about 2.30pm on Sunday, May 15.
The man was wearing a navy blue suit, white shirt and had a foreign accent. Anyone with information should contact police by phoning 101.
