The first vessel built by Cullen Sea School took its maiden voyage at the weekend.

The rowing skiff Mairi was launched on Saturday after being built from scratch by 16 volunteers in just five months.

Project coordinator, Katalin Urquhart, said: “It floats, that was the main thing. It was quite an operation. It was amazing to see how the wood was bound together.

“Five months is a record time for building a rowing skiff. It was excellent for our first major project.”

The skiff was piped to the harbour before being lowered into the water for the first time.

Secretary of the Three Harbours Association, Mairi Innes, christened the boat that bears her name with whisky at a ceremony at Cullen Harbour.

Spectators were then taken out into the open water by volunteers for a short cruise while people watched from the quayside.

Volunteers, including three Buckie High School pupils, built the craft with help from experienced boat builders.

The sea school, which opened in October, has already set its sights on its next project, which will be another rowing skiff that is expected to be completed in the winter.

Mrs Urquhart said there were now plans to establish a rowing team for Cullen, Portknockie and Findochty.

She said: “We want to develop it is a water sport centre with kayaks and paddle boats too.”
