Three business units in Elgin have been leased rent-free to a Moray group who are supporting the refugee crisis.
Yesterday, councillors agreed to waive the £11,000-a-year fee at the Chanonry Business Centre for the charity.
Moray Supports Refugees will now be using the units to collect and distribute aid donated for refugees across Europe.
Initially the business centre was used to distribute donations for four families from Syria being settled in Forres.
Members of the council’s policy and resources committee also agreed to award a 20% discount on rates and waive legal fees associated with the tenancy. The lease of the building has been granted to tsiMoray, which has been working closely with the group.
Moray Council initially provided transport for the donations to be distributed, but that has ceased with Moray Supports Refugees having their own arrangement.
A report, produced for the meeting, praised the group for the “welcoming atmosphere” they have provided for the families who have moved to Forres.
Council leader Stewart Cree said: “This will keep the effort going locally in Moray.”
And Keith and Cullen councillor Gary Coull added: “This is a great example of partnership working across the board.”
