The SNP heartland of Moray is poised to back Brexit, one of the party’s senior members in the region has claimed.
Paul Briggs has temporarily resigned from his post as political education officer in the Nationalists’ Moray branch, where he works closely with Westminster leader Angus Robertson, to campaign for Vote Leave.
Mr Briggs, who has been a party member for six years, said he wanted ties with Brussels severed so Scottish industry could be boosted over the next decade.
He also claimed there has been no hard feelings from the party hierarchy over his decision to defy policy.
“They have been absolutely brilliant, there has been no kickback,” said Mr Briggs.
“I’ve had about 50 to 60 e-mails saying it’s great to see a person standing up for their own thoughts. HQ in Edinburgh has been okay as well.”
He also claimed his party branch is “pretty much 60/40” in favour of Remain.
He added: “Moray is a really big anti-EU area and I think there is a strong possibility Moray will vote to Leave, which is quite exceptional in Scotland.”
