The majority of people who attended free diabetes checks in Elgin have been referred to their GP for tests.
Of the 115 people that attended the “know your risk” roadshow event, run by the Diabetes UK charity, 54% were found to require further checks.
The sessions were arranged to identify people in the town at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, a condition which can cause blindness and kidney failure and increases the likelihood of suffering a stroke.
The most significant risk factor for developing the condition is being overweight or obese.
The charity’s Linda McGlynn said she hoped that many of the residents would now change their lifestyles to reduce the risk of developing the illness.
Patients who attended the sessions were given a rough guide on how to adapt their diet and exercise more to reduce their weight.
Almost 24,000 people in the NHS Grampian area have been classed as having Type 2 diabetes, and more than 45,000 across
Scotland are believed to be living with it without having it diagnosed.
Doctors estimate that 500,000 are at high risk of developing the condition.
