Residents of Banff are to be asked for their thoughts on the sale of the town’s Canal Park.
A site at Canal Park and Old Market Place was identified last year for potential retail use and marketed for sale by Aberdeenshire Council.
A preferred bidder, which will not be named publicly while negotiations are under way, was identified earlier this year.
However, as a large portion of the site is common good land belonging to the community, the council must consult the public on the sale – and then seek permission from Banff Sheriff Court.
Investigations of the site will begin next week with engineers taking soil samples.
A consultation with locals will then be held in the new year.
Banff and Buchan area manager Angela Keith said: “We need to gather the public’s views on the potential sale of the land before any final decisions are made, and we will be sharing information on how people can get involved at the start of the year.”
