Fraserburgh Academy to review safety following schoolgirl attack

Security at a north-east school will be reviewed after a 13-year-old girl was attacked by an outsider.

Footage from Fraserburgh Academy’s games hall shared online last week showed a youth being kicked, punched and slapped repeatedly by another girl while her friends laugh.

The two-minute film had been recorded on one child’s mobile phone last Tuesday.

A 12-year-old girl was charged by the police in connection with the attack days later.

It was later revealed that the youngster was not a pupil at the school.

Now Fraserburgh Academy rector David Clark has now promised concerned parents that the school will take every step required to improve the safety of their children.

The youth had been able to walk into the building without challenge because the doors are kept insecure at lunchtimes to allow pupils to come and go freely.

In a statement released through the school’s website, Mr Clark said the pupil who was attacked is also receiving support to overcome the incident.

“The young person entered through the doors that are open during lunchtime for our own students to enter and leave the building,” he added.

“As a result of this we will review our site security and work closely with all our partners to ensure the continued well-being of our young people.

“Every day our pupils come to school, work hard, take part in a wide range of activities, develop skills and grow into responsible young people.

“This incident is upsetting for the school and the community but it is rare. We always act swiftly to anything that undermines the safety of our students and the progress of our school.”

The pupils who recorded the shocking attack will also face disciplinary action from the school.

Throughout the video, only one pupil appears to try to step in to prevent the attack.

Another exclaims “nice” as a rain of blows are landed on the youngster’s face.

Others giggle while being told to watch out for any teachers who may be nearby.

Aberdeenshire Council last night refused to comment on any safety measures that would be examined at the school.

A spokeswoman said: “Our position remains the same in as much as we will not comment on any live police investigations.”
