Banff and Buchan councillors have given the go-ahead to convert part of a Fraserburgh car showroom into six flats.
The plans, which were criticised by members of the public who said the development would have an adverse impact on the character of the area, had previously been deferred to allow a site visit.
Concerns had also been raised about parking, with the work at the Victoria Street building – a former hotel – creating no new spaces for potential residents.
But the Banff and Buchan area committee has approved the development with the condition that opaque glass be used on a window overlooking a nearby home. The plans were also backed by the local authority’s planners.
Aberdeenshire Council’s director of infrastructure services, Stephen Archer, said in his report: “The two upper floors of the building have lain vacant for some time, therefore there is no evidence to suggest that redevelopment of these premises would be prejudicial to the commercial interests of the town centre.”
Last night, local councillor Brian Topping said he welcomed the addition to the town, saying housing was “much needed”.
“It will help in the regeneration of the town centre, it’s bringing an unused building back into use. It’s very, very welcome.”
Work at the building will now create a one-bedroom flat on the ground floor, three flats on the first floor and two at attic level.
Currently, the ground floor of the property is used by Fraserburgh Car Sales as a showroom.
