A man has been charged by police over a fatal north-east fire which caused the death of a man in 1998.
Officers have revealed that a 42-year-old man will appear at Peterhead Sheriff Court following his arrest.
The development in the case comes more than 17 years after Gordon Graham died in the blaze at his home in Fraserburgh’s High Street.
PROFILE: Who was Gordon Graham?
A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Police Scotland can confirm that a 42-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with a fatal fire at 74 High Street, Fraserburgh, on May 3, 1998 which claimed the life of Gordon Graham.
“The man is due to appear at Peterhead Sheriff Court tomorrow.”
Mr Graham, 43, perished when a fire broke out in his first-floor tenement flat in May 1998.
Emergency crews rescued Mr Graham’s wife Anne from the window of their home in the early hours before a total of 35 firefighters battled to control the flames.
The roof of the building collapsed, devastating the High Street shops below including a pet shop where a number of animals also perished.
No one was charged following an initial investigation into the incident.
But years later, detectives reviewed and reopened the case alongside that of another separate fire which claimed the lives of two more men.
Until now, no charges have ever been brought.
