Monty Python star John Cleese has sparked outrage after ranting on social media about ‘half-educated tenement Scots’ in the English media.
The actor took to Twitter to blast Spectator editor, and former Nairn Academy pupil, Fraser Nelson over a column written in the Telegraph newspaper.
Cleese, 76, wrote: “Why do we let half-educated tenement Scots run our English press? Because their craving for social status makes them obedient retainers?”
When he was called out by Twitter followers, with one calling him “classless” the actor replied: “Seriously,I’d rather have educated, cultured and intelligent people in charge. Sorry for the elitism.”
“It’s not casual racism, it’s considered culturalism,” he added.
Scottish comedian Limmy responded tot he furore, writing: “It’s comforting to see somebody as educated and intelligent as John Cleese say something so ignorant. I don’t know why.”
Glasgow University-educated Mr Nelson also took to social media to respond to Cleese’s remarks.
He tweeted: “Nairn Academy, then a few years at Dollar [Academy] while my dad was abroad with fees covered by MoD. Then a 2:1. So he does have a point!”
