He is the symbol of Christmas to many families around the world, capturing imaginations with his magic.

Just his name conjures up special memories of Christmas mornings spent ripping open gifts – and excitement at discovering the surprises in store.

But despite there only being 29 sleeps until his busiest night of the year, Santa took some time out to tell the Press and Journal what makes Christmas so magical for him.

He was speaking in response to a controversial report by university researchers, which looked at the traditional culture of Santa and the role he plays in children’s lives.

In an exclusive interview held at one of his north-east grottos, he said: “Christmas isn’t just about me giving out presents to good boys and girls – it’s about a celebration of the year, and a time to come together and be festive.”

He added he was looking forward to spreading the joy next month, and said he was ready for a “very busy December”.

Elf Shannon Burr, from the North Pole, said the team was gearing up for a busy few weeks, putting the finishing touches to the toys, wrapping them and packing Santa’s sleigh.

She said: “We are very busy up here, but when I get a chance to help in the grottos, my favourite part is seeing all the children’s faces when they see Santa.”

Three-year-old Mia Durno, and one-year-old Cole Flett, were lucky enough to meet Santa in his grotto yesterday.

And Mia’s mum, Stephanie, explained why she felt it was important for the youngsters to enjoy the magic.

She said: “It’s magical and important to keep the excitement alive – it’s what you look forward to when you have kids.

“It makes this time of year so much more special and gives us all something to look forward to.”

Santa will return to his grotto at BA Country Stores, Lyne of Skene, this weekend. He will arrive by helicopter on Sunday at noon, and for the rest of the week be in the shop from 10am-2pm.

He will make another grand entrance by air on December 4, and then be in the shop from 10am-5pm from December 5-23. For more information call 01330 860840, or visit www.ba-events.com
