Returning SNP MP Brendan O’Hara has admitted he is “extremely worried” for the future of Argyll and Bute.
Mr O’Hara increased his majority after gaining 21,040 votes, followed by the Conservative’s Gary Mulvaney.
Yesterday, he said he was “delighted” at the result and that he was prepared to fight Brexit “all the way”.
He said: “I am very worried for the future of Argyll and Bute. We have a government which is hell-bent on Brexit. With his majority Boris Johnson will be seeking to take us out of the EU as quickly as possible. The idea he could get a trade deal by next December is fanciful nonsense.
“A no deal Brexit is still on the table. I am extremely worried. I will continue to oppose Brexit every step of the way.”
The total electorate for Argyll and Bute was 66,525 with 48,192 votes cast. The turnout at the polls was 72.4%.
Mr Mulvaney, a Conservative councillor, said: “I think it was obviously a very good night for the SNP nationally. We did well, we increased our vote but in some cases we were swimming against the tide.
“I’m delighted we have a majority Conservative government which is what we want. We need a strong government to take us forward and get Brexit done and get on with important things like health and education.”
