Headline act revealed for 700th anniversary celebrations of the Declaration of Arbroath

Multi-award winning folk band Breabach will headline a concert to mark the 700th anniversary of the Declaration of Arbroath.

The band will be taking to the Webster Memorial Theatre stage in April as the final act announced for the Declaration 700 Celebration.

In 1320, a letter was sent to Pope John XXII declaring Scotland’s Independence, signed by a number of Scottish nobility, and is thought to have been produced in Arbroath Abbey by the Abbot Bernard of Kilwinning.

It led to the Pope’s intervention, acting as a catalyst to the treaty which secured Scotland’s independence under King Robert the Bruce.

There are a number of events to mark that historic moment in the coming months, with the celebration the biggest.

It will feature a variety of music, song, spoken word and performances inspired by the anniversary.

The Scottish Folk Band of the Year and Live Act of the Year, Breabach will take to the stage after Arbroath singer Steve Byrne – winner of the Scots Singer of the Year title at the MG Alba Scottish Traditional Music Awards.

Mr Byrne said: “This will be a truly memorable event, with a great line-up of talents, of local and international fame, coming together to mark the occasion.

“Rooted in local traditions, the concert will showcase the creativity that Scotland has on offer to share with the world, celebrating this historical event that means so much to folk in my home town.

“With over 100 tickets already sold, I’d encourage my fellow Arbroathians to snap up tickets before they go.”

Dundonian singer Sheena Wellington, who opened the Scottish Parliament in 1999 with her rousing rendition of ‘A Man’s a Man For A That’, will also be performing, while broadcaster Billy Kay will be making a speech.

A piece of theatrical work commissioned for the concert, written by Dr Donald Smith, will be shown.

Edinburgh-based artist Andrew Redmond Barr will introduce his new book The Illustrated Declaration of Arbroath.

He said: “I’m delighted to be taking part in this wonderful cultural event to mark the 700th anniversary of one of Scotland’s greatest icons.

“Arbroath’s famous document has resonance right across Scotland and beyond and I look forward to seeing people from all over coming together to celebrate with us in April.”

The gala concert will take place at Webster Memorial Theatre on Saturday, April 4, at 7pm. Tickets are available on the theatre website or in person.
