People across the world will come together today to mark International Workers’ Memorial Day with a minute’s silence at 11am.
The event will commemorate those who have died as a result of a work-related injury or suffered an occupational illness.
It is held on April 28 every year and is recognised throughout the world, including by the Scottish and UK governments.
Aberdeen City Council co-leader Jenny Laing said this year’s event has been made more poignant as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
“Every day, workers are going onto the frontline to ensure they are protecting the rest of the community,” she said.
“We want to recognise the contribution they are making and, more importantly, we need to make sure we continue to work in partnership to protect the rights of workers so when they go into the workplace, they are guaranteed their health and safety will be protected.”
Cosla president Alison Evison, who is also an Aberdeenshire councillor, will lead the local government body’s commemorations via videolink from her home.
She said: “We will be holding a time of silence to show our respects to those who have tragically passed away or suffered a life-changing injury due to their employment.
“I would encourage others to unite and light a candle, not only in remembrance of those who have lost their lives, but to show our support for essential workers and the efforts being made to keep them safe at work during this unprecedented and challenging time.”
