North cities have been “bucking the trend” of the typically quiet summer labour market, with an increase in lockdown job applications.
Last month the number of CVs sent to prospective employers rocketed by more than 30% in Aberdeen compared to July, and almost 15% in Inverness.
Across Scotland, there was a 9.1% rise.
Jobs site CV-Library said the number of vacancies being advertised also jumped over the month by 18% in Inverness and 14% in Aberdeen.
Overall, however, the number of available posts publicised last month was almost 50% lower than in August of last year.
Lee Biggins, CV-Library’s founder and chief executive, said the figures show there is growing confidence in businesses and the economy.
He added: “We’ve been seeing application figures rise at a consistent rate for the past few months and while August is traditionally a slower month for hiring, the pandemic has caused a buck in this trend.
“It’s promising that more employers are advertising roles across Scotland and jobseekers should continue to make the most of these opportunities while they can.”
At the same time, however, the organisation found average salaries have taken a dip.
Last month, advertised wages in Aberdeen were down 10%.
Mr Biggins said: “If you’re hiring this month, you can expect to see application figures jump back up.
“However, as salaries have also dropped, you may find that you need to offer candidates a little more in order to pique their interest.”
