For the last two years, people of all ages have been debating the issue of independence – in taxis, pubs, workplaces, online and around the kitchen table.
And with Alex Salmond’s announcement that he will be stepping down as First Minister and leader of the SNP, people from both sides have flooded social networking sites with their thoughts.
Alex Salmond is a politician of huge talent and passion. He has been an effective First Minister, and always fights his corner.

Whether you agreed with his politics or not, @AlexSalmond conducted himself honourably during the whole #indyref campaign. Well done, Sir.

Haven't always agreed with Alex Salmond's politics but recognise his contribution & commitment to Scotland. Wish him well for the future

Think @AlexSalmond should have stayed. He's taken horrendous attacks because he's the most able politician in the UK.Huge loss to politics

Really sad day, but watching the resignation of @AlexSalmond as FM, he has done so in a great statesmanlike manner

Even if you dislike him, no one can question Salmond's passion and commitment. Personally, I wish him well for whatever comes next.

And even one of Mr Salmond’s more high-profile critics, Donald Trump, wished him well.
The pair famously fell out over the controversial offshore windfarm planned for Aberdeen Bay, which Mr Trump believes will spoil the view of his golf resort at nearby Menie.
And yesterday Mr Trump tweeted:
The people of Scotland have spoken—a great decision. I wish @AlexSalmond well & look forward to playing golf with him at Aberdeen!
