Overnight temperatures are expected to soar across the UK this evening – peaking at around 14°C in some areas of Scotland.
It is highly unusual for October night time temperatures to hit such highs – with 14°C normally a daytime peak for the month.
Some of the hottest areas will be in the north east. With Aberdeen, Inverness and Moray all expected to reach the 14°C mark.
The Met Office took to Twitter to express surprise at the temperature jump saying: “Overnight temps tonight of around 14 °C. This is what we would normally expect as a max temp in the day for October.”
And posted a map showing highs and lows across the country.
The hot weather is thought to be caused by Hurricane Fay – which has recently dissipated over the Atlantic Ocean.
Hurricane Gonzalo is the next weather front expected to have an impact on the UK. It hit Bermuda in the last 24 hours and is thought to be the strongest to hit the islands in the past 11 years.
Warnings were issued yesterday that the weather front could cause storms across Scotland early next week.
But a Met Office spokesperson has eased concerns, saying: “At this stage extreme conditions seem unlikely, but we’ll keep a close eye on developments over the next few days and keep everyone up to date if it looks like there is any sign of severe weather heading for the UK.”
