Family’s lucky escape after car crashes into house

It started off like any normal night for the Wright family as they settled down in their living room to watch TV.

But the evening took a dramatic turn for Lindy and Stephen Wright and their children, Holly and Scott, when a Vauxhall Astra smashed through the front of their house and landed at their feet.

The dramatic scene unfolded on Monday night around 7pm as the white car travelled on Waterside Road, Kirkintilloch.

Neighbours in the East Dunbartonshire town described how they heard what sounded “like a rocket” launching as the vehicle left the road, crashed through an iron railing and became embedded in the wall of the Wright’s semi-detached family house.

The front window was completely destroyed by the impact, while bricks surrounding the window were blasted away.

Miraculously, the family-of-four escaped with just minor injuries despite the devastation caused.

Police confirmed two people were taken to hospital, but that their injuries were not “significant or serious”.

Police and firefighters drew the family’s Venetian blinds over the accident scene and had to erect struts to stop the facing wall of the house from collapsing.

A tarpaulin was later draped over a hole which had been left at the front of the house.

Neighbours said they had been left shaken by the accident and that it was a “miracle” nobody had died.

One man said: “I heard an almighty bang and thought it was folk letting off fireworks.

“But when I saw what had happened, I couldn’t believe it.

“You don’t expect to be sitting watching Emmerdale one minute then fired across your living room when a car crashes into your house the next. It’s a miracle nobody died.”

Another woman added: “It’s gone into the house off the road, through the garden like a rocket.”

Locals also said they had been campaigning for years for traffic restrictions in the area.

One young mum who lives nearby said: “Had the clocks not gone back, our children could have been out on the pavement there with their friends. It doesn’t bear thinking about.

“There have been accidents here for years.”
