The north is set for four inches of snow over the course of today and tomorrow as winter weather continues to sweep the country.
Met Office has issued a yellow “be aware” warning as frequent blasts of sleet and snow are forecast throughout the country.
A spokesperson for Met Office said: “Accumulations of 2-4 cm (0.8 to 1.6ins) of snow are likely above about 100m, but also to low levels locally, and more widely over the northern half of Scotland, where more than 10cm (4ins) is likely above 300m.
“A persistent spell of sleet and snow may settle at low levels across Scotland on Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning.”
The snow follows high winds that were stirred up by an extra-powerful jet stream in the Atlantic triggered by plunging temperatures in the United States, which sent the country into chaos.
Over the weekend a total of 120,000 homes in Scotland lost power and a number of lorries overturned on motorways.
Travel has also been affected with closed roads and disruption to several public transport services.
Commuters are urged to take caution and plan ahead as the weather continues throughout the week.
