A jolly lollipop man has been handed down a ban from a Scottish local authority – on giving children high fives.
Nkosana Mdikane – who has been called “Scotland’s happiest lollipop man” – helps primary school children cross the road in the Dumbarton area.
Affectionately known as “Smiley”, Mr Mdikane has proven a hit with local children for always having a smile on his face and always giving them a high five.
But now he has been told by West Dunbartonshire Council he has to stop because of safety concerns.
A spokeswoman for the authority said: “All patrollers are instructed when crossing children over a road to remain static with one hand on their stick and the other stretched outwards. This ensures that they can be seen and effectively provides a barrier between school pupils and the traffic.”
